Grid Connection Engineer - Wave Energy
Role
With Wave Energy as a new renewable source on today's grid, you'd be working in the electrical team to ensure the Wave Energy Converter (WEC) and Wave Farm are compliant with applicable grid codes for various farm capacities starting from <1MW to ~100 MW and more.
You’d be ensuring relevant grid functionalities are assessed and translated into technical requirements; own specification, selection and operation of the grid converter; perform power system studies and integrate grid functionalities across various power and control systems (WEC and farm-level) in CorPower’s technology.
The plugging in of a brand-new utility-scale renewable source in the grid hasn't happened often before. So, we’re looking for an innovative and driven electrical engineer who would drive the grid connection journey of utility-scale wave energy for years to come!
Responsibilities
Lead technical side of grid connection feasibility, concept and FEED studies on WEC, array and farm levels, including upcoming commercial wave farm projects
Act as technical interface towards DSO/TSO, certification and testing bodies and other external stakeholders
Own grid-side converter and WEC-level functional requirements including functionalities across active power control, reactive power control, voltage and frequency support and fault-ride-through in relation to applicable grid codes
Translate and implement grid code requirements into overall WEC electrical design, converter control requirements, protection limits and SCADA and setpoint interfaces
Ensure grid-side converter requirements are captured in technical specifications, supplier contracts and FAT procedures
Own compliance with EU RfG, its national implementations and all relevant local grid codes, standards and requirements from a technical standpoint
Lead technical discussions with stakeholders for staged compliance programmes, post-deployment commissioning and reporting
Maintain grid compliance matrix against converter functions and verification methods (simulation, test, field evidence)
Develop or coordinate RMS, EMT and other power system models for WEC, array and farm level
Validate models against testing requirements and deliver models to DSO/TSO and certification bodies
Define grid-side converter compliance strategies across standalone test rigs and in-ocean testing across WEC, array and farm levels
Support test campaigns by working with internal testing teams and external stakeholders
Contribute to type and project certification with regards to grid connection and compliance
Qualifications and skills
MSc or PhD degree in electrical engineering, power systems or power electronics
Minimum of 8 years of power systems or grid connection experience in wind, solar, BESS or similar industries
Strong experience within grid compliance related electrical design of renewable energy sources
Strong understanding of grid compliance domain on European level and principles of its technical implementation
Strong understanding of grid compliance testing from technical perspective
Prior experience with grid-side converter controls, power quality and associated control systems
Prior experience with technical engineering towards grid compliance certification on equipment, turbine, plant levels or similar is meritable
Practical experience with PowerFactory, PSCAD, MATLAB/Simulink at least in a limited capacity is expected
Prior involvement in first-of-a-kind or prototype grid connection is highly desirable

About CorPower Ocean
CorPower Ocean is a global leader in Wave Energy technology. The ocean forms one of the largest yet least explored renewable energy sources on earth. We bring a new class of high efficiency Wave Energy Converters (WECs) enabling robust and cost-effective harvesting of electricity from ocean waves. The design principle is inspired by the pumping principles of the human heart and offers five times more energy per ton of device compared to previously known technologies, allowing a large amount of energy to be harvested using a small and low-cost device. A unique transparent protection mode brings survivability in the toughest storm conditions. We are headquartered in Sweden with offices in Portugal, Scotland and Norway.
