Mechanical Design Engineer (Steel Structures)
The Role:
The Mechanical team at CorPower Ocean is looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer experienced in the design of large steel structures and industrial equipment to take a key role in the development and optimisation of our innovative wave energy converters.
The role involves designing large, welded steel structures and mechanical systems for offshore environments, driving development from concept through testing and release for production.
You will work closely with the mechanical design team but will also interact extensively with the wider organisation, including supply chain, manufacturing, testing and field installation teams, requiring strong collaboration skills.
Responsibilities:
Design of large mechanical structures and welded steel assemblies (from concept to release-for-production)
Present to cross-disciplinary stakeholders during design reviews
Perform structural analysis (hand calculations and FEA)
Produce technical documentation for internal use and for third-party verification and certification
Perform failure mode, effects and criticality analysis for modules and systems
Manage your systems and components to meet performance, schedule and budget targets
Investigate improvements to performance, reliability and manufacturability
Interface with requirement, supply chain, manufacturing and field-testing teams
Support assembly, testing and pilot installations in the field
Support and mentor junior engineers when needed
Skills and Experience:
You have 5+ years of experience designing large mechanical systems or welded steel structures, ideally in industries such as offshore, marine, renewable energy, heavy machinery, or industrial equipment.
You have experience designing fabricated steel structures or heavy mechanical assemblies exposed to dynamic loads, fatigue, or demanding operating environments.
You have experience with structural analysis of large fabricated or welded steel systems, exposed to dynamic loads, fatigue, or demanding operating environments.
Experience contributing or leading end-to-end product development cycles from design, build, test to production in multiple projects.
You have a broad interest in mechanical systems. Experience with mooring systems, gearboxes, hydraulics, structural optimisation, pressure vessels, fabrication methods, sensors or power generation equipment is considered an advantage.
Experience with Creo CAD, Windchill PLM and ANSYS is beneficial; equivalent tools are also relevant.
You may have a BSc or MSc degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline, but practical experience and engineering mindset are most important.
You are proficient in English, both spoken and written.
As a person, you:
are striving for excellence, put quality into everything you do
are self-motivated and constantly seek the most efficient ways to work
search for simple and sustainable solutions to difficult problems
love to learn new things, and take pride in constantly developing your skills
are persistent, knowing it takes stamina to reach pioneering goals
see your tasks through to completion
are comfortable in presenting your solutions internally and externally
are data driven and strive to always back your points with solid analysis

About CorPower Ocean
CorPower Ocean is a global leader in Wave Energy technology. The ocean forms one of the largest yet least explored renewable energy sources on earth. We bring a new class of high efficiency Wave Energy Converters (WECs) enabling robust and cost-effective harvesting of electricity from ocean waves. The design principle is inspired by the pumping principles of the human heart and offers five times more energy per ton of device compared to previously known technologies, allowing a large amount of energy to be harvested using a small and low-cost device. A unique transparent protection mode brings survivability in the toughest storm conditions. We are headquartered in Sweden with offices in Portugal, Scotland and Norway.
